Federico Paternina founded the winery in 1896 on a historic site in Ollauri, Rioja Alta, where the cellars date back to the 16th century. A landmark moment came in 1956, when the estate welcomed the legendary Ernest Hemingway. Known for his deep affection for Spain—its culture, traditions, and wines—Hemingway greatly admired the distinctive wines of Paternina.
